One of Buster Keaton’s least known works is his last silent film, “Spite Marriage” (1929). In this comedic treasure, Keaton plays Elmer, a hapless tailor’s assistant, who falls hard for Trilby Drew (Dorothy Sebastian), a snooty actress in love with Lionel Benmore (Edward Earle). When Lionel breaks up with Trilby, she agrees to marry Elmer only to make her lover jealous. Although Keaton is thrilled at first, he grows despondent when he discovers her motives and embarks on a sea voyage with a crew of bootleggers. Although he hopes to forget her completely, a series of coincidences throws Elmer and Trilby together and she reevaluates her opinion of him.
