THE FREEDMANS is an homage to Dallas’ rich Black history of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Written by members of Soul Rep’s writing consortium, this production has been reworked since it was first performed in 1998 to commemorate the opening of Dallas’ Freedman’s Cemetery. It is comprised of compelling, colorful, and chilling true and imagined stories of the people who settled and resided in Dallas’ Freedman’s Town community. Through this play, we honor the lives and stories of those interred at Freedman’s Memorial Cemetery — the mothers and children; enslaved Africans; the lynched; the educators; and early entrepreneurs and farmers.
