"March Out Hunger" Food Drive
Event Phone: (361) 792-7950
Admission Price: $0
The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. (VFW) District 6; Humana, a leading health and well-being company; and Coastal Bend Food Bank are partnering to host a food and fund drive through June 14, 2019.
As part of the “March Out Hunger” campaign, non-perishable food will be collected at 18 VFW Posts in the Corpus Christi area, the Humana neighborhood center, and 2 Conviva Care Center locations.
• VFW District 6 – 18 posts in the Corpus Christi area. For VFW Post locations visit: www.vfw.org/find-a-post
• Humana neighborhood center, 4117 S. Staples St., Suite 260, Corpus Christi, TX
• Conviva Care Centers:
o Central Corpus: 917 South Port Ave, Corpus Christi, TX
o Bayside: 4254 S. Alameda Street, Corpus Christi, TX
In addition to food donations, members of the community can provide monetary donations to this food drive at: https://coastalbendfoodbank.org/donate/
On June 14 from 10 a.m. to noon, Humana and the VFW will partner on a “canstruction" project to create a replica of the USS Lexington with donated food. “Canstructions” are giant structures made entirely from full cans of food and are meant to bring awareness to the issue of food insecurity.
One in five households served by a local food bank has at least one member who has served in the U.S. military. This is according to Feeding America, the largest hunger-relief organization in the United States. Coastal Bend Food Bank is one of Feeding America’s network of food banks.
Humana is bringing the VFW and Coastal Bend Food Bank together to impact food insecurity locally. Last year, Humana partnered with Feeding America to stage a series of events that drove food donations and raised awareness of food insecurity with a focus on helping veterans. In addition, Humana is a national affiliate partner of the VFW.
Food insecurity is defined as a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. In the United States, food insecurity affects 1 in 8 people.
Following the food drive, the Coastal Bend Food Bank will distribute donated food exclusively to community agencies that support veterans dealing with food insecurity.
