"Cinema would be much the poorer without Stanley Kubrick's legacy, but Filmworker emphatically proves that Stanley Kubrick’s legacy would be much the poorer without Leon Vitali.”—Jessica Kiang, The Playlist

Few filmmakers hold such a titanic place in history and yet revealed so little of themselves as Stanley Kubrick. The revelatory new documentary Filmworker both uncovers new aspects of Kubrick’s life and work and reveals an unassuming figure who made that life and work possible. Leon Vitali was an actor who had a memorable supporting role in Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon when Kubrick asked him to become his assistant. Working for Kubrick meant being consumed by Kubrick, and Vitali carried out innumerable tasks for his boss: from finding the Diane Arbus–inspired twins for The Shining and inspecting 500 35mm film prints before the release of Eyes Wide Shut to recording every single Foley footstep in Full Metal Jacket! This tender, playful, and illuminating documentary is not only an engrossing character study of one of the most fascinating behind-the-scenes players in movie history, but it also provides a rare glimpse into how Kubrick put his movies together.
