Counting Crows was formed in Berkeley in 1991 and consists of Adam Duritz (lead vocals and piano), David Bryson (guitar), Charlie Gillingham (keyboards and accordion), Dan Vickrey (lead guitar), David Immerglück (guitar, banjo, and mandolin), Jim Bogios (drums and percussion) and Millard Powers (bass guitar). Their musical style is best described as a blend of alternative rock (is a style of rock music that emerged from the independent music underground of the 1980s and became widely popular in the 1990s) and jangle pop (sub genre of rock music that originated in the 1960s and features trebly, arpeggiated picking - typically on chiming electric twelve string guitars or 6 string guitars, often employing a capo and chord inversions - together with straightforward song structures). They cite Van Morrison, R.E.M., Mike + The Mechanics, Bob Dylan, and The Band as their main influences and they saw mainstream success with the release of their debut album (August and Everything After) in 1993. They went on to have a stellar career with 6 more studio albums, 6 live albums, 2 compilation albums, and they’ve sold over 20 million albums worldwide. Their single, Accidentally in Love, was featured in the film Shrek 2 and got an Academy Award nomination in 2004.
