A remake of early film genius Ernst Lubitsch’s Broken Lullaby, Frantz is nothing like the screwball comedies Lubitsch was largely known for. Instead, Frantz centers around a German soldier killed in World War I, his fiancée Anna (Paula Beer, The Dark Valley) who has come to live with his grieving parents since his death, and a mysterious Frenchman, Adrien (Pierre Niney, Yves Saint-Laurent) who Anna observes coming to pay respects at Frantz’s graveside. Curious to learn how this ostensible enemy might have known her lost love and hungry to know more about the secrets her Frantz may have kept, Anna begins a friendship with Adrien that develops into something besides a friendship. But what, exactly, is difficult to name. When Adrien himself disappears, Anna has to decide what to do next.
