The Hartman Arena concept was tossed around for several years before finally developing into the vision that created what the facility is today. In the spring of 2007, Wink Hartman announced his plan to build a 4,700 seat arena in Park City for his indoor professional football team, the Wichita Wild. Mr. Hartman stated that while he would not turn away people who wanted to book the arena for small shows or other sporting events, he would not actively pursue booking those dates. The arena was to be a home for his football team first and foremost. In October of 2007 the project was put to a halt when cost estimates for construction of the arena grew too high. In February of 2008 the project received the green light again after some rearranging was made to the construction plans to make them more cost efficient. The new designs for the arena included one concourse instead of two, and also repositioned the site to maximize drainage. Physical changes were not the only thing in store for the design of Hartman Arena that spring; Mr. Hartman's vision for the building also changed. He no longer saw the building as just a football facility. The Wichita market (including concerts, family shows, and trade shows) entertains an average of 3,000 people at any given event. Hartman's facility would be the perfect size to entertain Wichita for ANY show, not just football. Green initiatives were at the forefront throughout the building phase of the arena. The arena is subterranean (the seating bowl is located underground), which helps keep costs down for heating and cooling. Recycled materials were used for the parking lots, steel, insulation, and plastics in the building. There are still ongoing initiatives as well. New, innovative recycling ideas are in place inside the arena.
