Exchanging Landscapes

Exchanging Landscapes features drawings and paintings by David Mudrinich, an artist and art professor at Arkansas Tech University. His work is inspired by the beauty of the Oklahoma Tallgrass Prairie and the Ozark-River Valley Region of western Arkansas. Both regions are part of the Arkansas River watershed and they portray a transitional environment that carries us from East to West. As an artist, Mudrinich has always been intrigued with the landscape as a sense of place and the various characteristics that make a particular location unique. This can include the natural geographic features of that landscape as well as the human alterations made to the land. He renders drawings and small studies on site to gain the full experience of the sounds, smells, wind, temperature, texture and history of that place. He will then rely on these sketches, his memory and an occasional photo to create a larger piece in the studio. The viewpoint can be either panoramic or more intimate in scope. “Everything within an environment is always subject to change,” states Mudrinich. “This continuous transformation allows me to visit a place repeatedly and always experience something new.”
