Slap Shot may not be the greatest sports movie ever made (although one could make a decent case), but it is a strong representative of the cohort of the greatest sports movies ever made: a generation of films that combined the new ‘70s Hollywood comic realism with the natural, human narrative power of sport that’s been known for millennia. Put it up alongside The Longest Yard, Breaking Away and The Bad News Bears, and you’ve got yourself quite a little film festival.
