Last year, when we showed The Babadook, we said “parenthood is scary.” And it is, but it turns out being parented is pretty dang scary too. Look, Hereditary is the kind of movie that’s best experienced knowing as little about it as possible. So here are a couple tidbits: it’s about a family dealing with its own history after the death of their monstrous grandmother. It’s about the weight of a dark family history, turning the violence of memory and emotion into visceral, physical violence. It’s visually dark and twisted, and thematically pitch-black. It trades on the real anxieties of life — the trauma everyone experiences and carries around, the parts of yourself that you didn’t make yourself. The A/V Club called it “pure emotional terrorism.” It’s far and away the most talked-about horror movie of the year. It’s challenging to the point of eliciting a kind of dreadful misery. It’s got incredible performances from Ann Dowd and the incomparable Toni Collette. If you liked The Babadook or The Witch, if you thought Rosemary’s Baby was a laugh and Goodnight Mommy was too mild, or if you just want to hear the most upsetting sound in your entire life, you might like (or at least be able to make it through) this movie. Either way, you will never, ever forget it.
