Depending on your perspective, Freddy Krueger has either been dead ever since long before his first film appearance, or he can’t die at all. But the Nightmare series has never been one to let consistent mythos get in the way of a solid rhyme, and thus: Freddy’s Dead. Set more than a decade after the last movie, Freddy’s Dead presents a vision of the future in which Krueger has killed almost every child and teenager in the whole city of Springwood; amazingly, this hasn’t attracted the attention of the UN or anything, and it’s determined that the only way to permanently kill him is to drag him out of dreams and into the “real” world – creator Wes Craven (also behind the Scream series and Freddy semi-reboot New Nightmare) has always been obsessed with how the fiction of horror movies intersects with reality. So no, in the end, this was not to be the Final Nightmare after all. But it does bring a miles-over-the-top performance by Robert Englund, cameos from Alice Cooper and Roseanne Barr, and the crazy, campy visual effects that are the hallmark of the series. What’s not to like?
