Upon the release of Face/Off in 1997, most reviews and reactions seemed to focus on one of three things: John Travolta’s ongoing resurgence as a popular movie star; the introduction of bonkers John Woo action filmmaking to Western audiences; or the fact that the last half-hour of the movie all seems to be climax. And listen, all of those are very good point and interesting topics of discussion. Nearly 20 years down the line, though, it seems clear that the real significance of Face/Off is as one of the first steps in Nicolas Cage’s full-on descent into acting insanity.
