So the thing about Psycho is: if you don’t already know what the Bates Motel is, the building itself is pretty unassuming. There’s a spooky house nearby where the creepy owner lives, but that’s no big deal. It’s just a motel. But if you’re in the cast of 1977 video-nasty Eaten Alive, when you show up to the Starlight Hotel, a ramshackle little disaster of a building deep in the backwater of swampy, rural Texas, it’s obviously trouble. And then you meet the guy who runs the place, Judd, who is clearly out of his mind. He has a pet crocodile that lives outside and just ate some poor people’s dog. He’s swinging a big scythe around and just generally giving off “I’m definitely a murderer” vibes from minute one. Why would you stay at that hotel, is what we’re trying to say. The official recommendation of Tampa Theatre is: find a different hotel. But definitely come see Robert Englund (you know, Freddy Krueger?) in his much-less-well-known role of frisky, hooker-hiring Buck in Eaten Alive.
