Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy) is the spoiled heir to the throne of Zamunda, sworn by his father (James Earl Jones) to marry a woman he has never. But desiring instead a wife of his own choosing, he recruits the help of one of his subjects (Arsenio Hall), steals off to America, and tries to make his own life in a different land of different opportunities.
