Ed was voted #1 Rising Star Male Vocalist in the DownBeat critics’ poll last year. What makes that particularly amazing is that he’s about to turn 87 years old. Seriously. He learned jazz harmony from Charles Mingus, who used to hang out at his sister’s house across the street, when they were growing up in Watts in the 1940s. He was the vocalist for the famous Warden’s Band at San Quentin with Art Pepper & Frank Morgan. They did a weekend at Tula’s for the Earshot Festival last year and sold that tiny room out. Last month he did six shows at Dizzy’s (Jazz at Lincoln Center) with George Cables.
