Most insect species are beneficial to human and natural ecosystems alike, providing essential services such as pollination, pest control, and nutrient cycling. In this distance learning workshop, Jessica Beckham looks at lesser-appreciated insect groups—among them syrphid flies, dragonflies, and dung beetles— discussing their biology, roles in ecosystems, and benefits for humans. She will also provide an overview of recent research on what the press has deemed the “Insect Apocalypse,” including actions we can take to conserve vital insect populations and our ecosystems.
