The Children Texas History Forum is an annual event held during Fiesta San Antonio. This year, events will be held at Casa Navarro, the home of Jose Antonio Navarro, a Texas patriot, signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, elected representative, scholar, statesman, rancher, and merchant. Students will be able to tour his home and step back in time to see not only where, but how he lived. The theme this year enhances the ongoing Tricentennial Celebration of 300 years of Texas history by featuring the flags that flew over Texas during those years. Navarro personally saw and experienced many of these flags. He noted in his writings that as he rode by the Alamo on his way out of town in February 1836 to sign the Texas Declaration of independence in Washington on the Brazos that a Mexican Flag with the number 1824 was flying over the Alamo. A replica of the 1824 flag and other select flags will be part of the Children’s Forum. Reenactors and hostesses dressed in period clothing will present these flags in an interactive approach with the children. Many of these presenters are direct descendants of those who once hoisted these historic flags and will include Navarro, Canary Islander (Travieso), Seguin, George, Hamm, Walker and Lancaster descendants.
The Alamo Couriers Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas is a 200 member chapter composed of women who are descendants of the citizens who settled Texas and gave birth to the Republic of Texas. We also sponsor a hundred-plus member Children of the Republic of Texas group. We encourage historical research into the earliest records of Texas, fostering heritage, preserving of documents and perpetuation of the memory and spirit of the men and women who pioneered, settled, and fought for Texas.
