Paper Trail: Papermaking with Wauke and Other Local Fibers

Event Phone: (808) 322-3362
Admission Price: Starting From $180.00
The story of wauke began as one of the canoe plants introduced by early voyaging Polynesians. A new island home, rich volcanic soils and a warm tropical climate gave wauke a natural haven to thrive along streams and moist forest. Hawaiians used wauke to create their prized bark cloth known as kapa. Thousands of miles away in Japan, another island culture, used the same plant (kozo) to develop the fine art of papermaking. Here at the Donkey Mill Art Center, we celebrate these two culturally significant practices to create a unique paper made from locally grown wauke. In this 2-day workshop, participants will embark on a hands-on approach to processing wauke fibres from cultivation, harvesting, steaming, cleaning, cooking, and beating. Students will learn about the tools/equipment and chemicals (and natural alternatives) used in the papermaking process and basic techniques to form sheets of paper.
