Join Casa Navarro and Confederate Reunion Grounds State Historic Sites in exploring the Tejano origins of Pan de Campo, the official Bread of the State of Texas, through interactive baking demonstrations and tastings that reflect the history of Tejanos in Texas.

Pan de Campo, or field bread, was a staple of vaqueros tending cattle on vast South Texas ranches. The bread was prepared by combining flour, sugar, water and salt and baking it in a Dutch oven. The simple recipe baked quickly and was eaten with dried meat, beans, corn, peppers, eggs and wild game. In the nineteenth and twentieth century, Pan de Campo was prepared for ferias, or festivals. These celebrations often coincided with harvests or religious holidays and included music, games, and dancing. Pan de Campo’s popularity and rich history led to its designation as the State Bread of Texas in 2005. Have questions? Need to register?
