Mexican Bark Painting with Maria Natividad. Mexican Bark or Amate Painting is a Mexican Folk Art that has been around since pre-Colombian times.
It originally was made for painting codices by the indigenous people but after the Spanish conquest its manufacture and usage was diminished. It gained more popularity in the 20th century and became a popular folk art in Mexico. Maria Almeida Natividad, a well-known local artist and educator will lead you in the exploration of the history of Mexican Bark Painting as well as the purpose, process and symbolism found in this craft. Attendees will have the opportunity to create their own Amate Bark painting using traditional techniques, designs and authentic Mexican bark paper. All the materials needed for the workshop will be provided for the participants.
