GOES-16 is revolutionizing the way we collect weather and environmental information from space. The Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) views Earth with 16 spectral bands (compared to five on the current GOES system). These bands collect data from different wavelengths across the visible (light) and infrared wavelengths (not visible to the human eye).
The different wavelength values indicate elements on the surface, such as trees or water, or in the atmosphere, such as clouds, moisture or smoke. ABI’s additional detail and richer images will give us more information to help understand the makeup of storms. Tracking their direction, detecting changes in Earth’s surface (such as forest disruptions and fires), and monitoring volcanic activity will also be easier.
Better information and earlier warnings will help save lives and property during severe weather events – and curtail unnecessary flight cancellations and severe weather area evacuations.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Sheldon Drobot, Ph.D., MBA, is the Principal, Noble Causes for Harris Space & Intelligence. His previous research has focused on the development of a solar energy forecast decision support system, and determining the viability of using vehicles as mobile weather collection platforms, which he presented at TEDxBoulder.
