The Metal Casting and Mold Making class will be a natural progression of the Intro to Metal Casting class (Intro will not be a prerequisite). This two-day class moves on from carving and presents students with an opportunity to build a pattern, make a mold and leave with a one of a kind sculptural object. On the first day, using found objects as well as moldable medium, the students will build a positive composition. They will then make an open-face mold off of this composition using resin bonded sand.
The second morning, the sand-mold, a negative representation of the original object will then be cast in aluminum in the mobile foundry. The resulting aluminum object will be a positive relief sculpture to then be finished on the final afternoon. As a result of this workshop students will gain a stronger understanding of sculpture design, positive vs negative imaging, mold making, metal casting, and surface treatment.
